Our plans
The companies

EUMind On your left you see our team, (from left to right): Floortje, Bram, Tabitha, Aya and Nehemia. We are from the school, the Lorentz Lyceum located in Arnhem. We all want to start a business in the future and when we do so, it is nice to have knowledge about Ecological Companies. We have chosen the subject Ecological Companies for this reason. Under this text, you see a video where we introduce ourselves. |
What are ecological companies?
Ecological companies, also known as environmental enterprises, are environmentally friendly companies. Most of the time their goal is to reduce global warming. They do this by for example:
- Analyzing greenhouse gas emissions
- Reducing energy consumption
- Reducing waste
- Optimizing employee's transportation
- Choosing sustainable suppliers
Lorentz LyceumLorentz Lyceum started somewhere around 1866 as an HBS. The school has just moved this year from the old building to a newer one in Schuytgraaf. The location of the new building is well chosen. The neighbourhood the Schuytgraaf provides new students and because the school is next to a train station, the school also appeals to students far away.
Mr Slothouwer’s opinion on if the school is environmentally friendly is that the school is in some ways environmentally friendly but not as much as they should. The new building itself is environmentally friendly, they recycle paper, however, we can not be called an environmentally friendly school based on the STG’s. Mr Slothouwer does not see our school yet as a leading example of being environmentally friendly. “We are doing moderately okay, but we could do better.” Lorentz Lyceum has plans to become more environmentally friendly in the future. But since they just moved buildings, they have to take some time to settle down first. One of the plans is to put solar panels on the roof. As the two “customers” we interviewed two students, Sade Hendriks (TV3) And Devid Nithiananthan (H5). Sade enjoys that the school hosts things outside of school and so does Devid. They both agree that the school does make its efforts to keep it environmentally friendly, but there can be improvements. One thing that Sade enjoys is the water fountain that fills up your water bottle so that you do not have to use unnecessary plastic. In conclusion, Lorentz makes its efforts to keep everything environmentally friendly, but there is still room for improvement. That improvement will take place somewhere in the near future after Lorentz has settled down in its new building. Lorentz Lyceum |
RijkswaterstaatRijkswaterstaat is part of the Dutch government, it was established in 1798. Back then Rijkswaterstaat was there to protect the Netherlands from flooding, caused by rivers and the ocean. But nowadays they also maintain roads and prevent traffic jams.
Rijkswaterstaat works all around the country because it’s a part of the government and needs to help every part of the country. Robert for instance works in an office building in Utrecht, along the A12n. Rijkswaterstaat Has more than 17 million customers because the entire Dutch population is their customer. The company pursues an environmentally friendly policy because they want to be a good example for companies in the Netherlands. They also want this, because of the fact that traffic jams emit a lot of CO2 gasses, these gasses are really bad for the environment. That’s why they want people to travel less by car. The company still consumes a lot of energy by heating and lighting their offices. And the company uses a lot of energy on lighting the roads, opening and closing bridges. But the good news is that the company has plans to change this in the future. The company has plans to build and apply more things that we can reuse, for instance: building recyclable bridges and using asphalt for building roads. They want to build more Solar and wind farms along the roads of the Netherlands. They are also hiring more people who work ecologically because most people are still trained to work with traditional construction methods. So in conclusion, Rijkswaterstaat is a company of the Dutch government that is there to prevent the Netherlands from flooding and preventing traffic jams. And their next goals is to provide the Netherlands with more ecological transportation. Robert Kok and Rijkswaterstaat |
