Jesse m, Teun, Auke, Nahuel
hiii, we are Jesse, Nahuel, Auke and teun and our topic is green trips and our main research question is: How can we make trips greener?
Research
We made a survey to do some research about how others travel around the world. We made a google form which we send through whatsapp to 67 people and 18 people responded. So that is around 26-27 procent of the people that were invited.
Teun was the one who made the form and Jesse helped him in making that.
The summary of our interview:
We had had 5 questions which people had to answer and we will discuss the answers.
Question 1:
How do you mostly travel to an international country?
Question 2
Do you travel a lot in the holidays?
Question 3
Question 4
Do you travel a lot by plane
Question 5
With which transport do you travel the most?
We asked 10 students how they travel and how much they travel.
- Meher, 13: Uses the bus and didn’t travel this year.
- Dhruwin, 15: Uses mainly cars and private transport. Doesn’t travel a lot.
- Ankit, 13: Uses mainly cars and doesn’t travel much.
- Rahibh, 14: Uses mainly cars and rickshaws. Doesn’t travel much.
- Pearl, 13: Uses the bus and travels a lot.
- Adit, 14: Travels mostly by bus and doesn’t travel much.
- Sameer, 15: Travels by bus and car. Doesn’t travel a lot.
- Niall, 14: Travels by car and travels occasionally.
- Rish, 15: Travels by car and doesn’t travel a lot.
We asked 10 students 2 questions of which 9 answered: Which transport do you use to go to school? and Do you travel abroad a lot?
We see that most of the people don't travel a lot or travel occasionally but nearly all of them use the car or the bus which is very polluting. An answer could be using the bike or go walk. But maybe it is inaccessible and they have to travel by car or bus. Why would it be inaccessible? because there might be a lot of cars and busses and the chances of getting hit are pretty big, or maybe it could also be that there aren't bikes provided or sold in India. The last possible answer might be that the schools are very far away. Overall this could explain the enormous pollution in India.

We also asked 5 teachers how they got to school and how far they had to travel
We asked 5 teachers 2 questions and the answers were very interesting and the questions were:
How far do you live from school?
How do you get to school?
All 5 teachers answered the 2 questions. Let's have a look at what the answers were.
Diest: 15km by car
Boogert: 18km by train or bike.
Gerretsen: 5km by bike
Kerkhof: 12km by train or car
Hulsebosch: 25km by train
As you can see the answer differs a little but the teachers mainly came here as fast as possible going by car and train mostly and none of them opted for a more sustainable choice like the trolley (bus). Maybe it isn't accessible or maybe it takes too long so maybe the government has to make more of these buses. Right now they are using bad kinds of transport because it is fast and efficient but it isn't as good for the world. As for the train or bike it is quite sustainable and fast so it is optimal. IF you have a look at the distances it is actually farther than that I expected so it is way harder and you are really on the polluting kinds of transport that really don't help the world with climate change. All in all I think that I expected more people to come on bikes than cars.

We asked a family member about how they travel for a week.Because of corona you can see in the results that theres not really anywhere to go than get groceries
We also asked 5 people who use public transport about how they travel and how much. |
Mom Dad, how much do you travel using a car?
Ralph: I only travel when going on vacation or my work. The rest I use my bike. Anke: I only use the car if I want to go to places I cant get to with my bike. Things as also as Ralph said on vacation or things as work because I work in Friesland most of the time so I got a car from work to travel to my work Ralph: yes, I also work in Friesland most of the time so I also go there using a car |
Person 1: person one travels by train a lot because he has to go to work that is pretty far away from him. He also told us that he travels three times a week for his work and the other two days he works at home because of corona.
person 2: person 2 uses their car a lot to one: go to his work two: get groceries and three: visits family members often. She uses her car around 6-7 times a week.
person 3: person 3 also goes by car but only goes twice a week because he has to get groceries in the nearest supermarket but tehy aren't close enough to go by bike or take a walk, this person works home all the time because of corona.
person 4: person 4 works at home and only uses his bike to go get groceries or he takes a walk with his dog which he does three times a day and he gets his groceries 2 times a week.
person 5: person 5 drives his car a lot because he has a job where he has to physically be and is not able to work at home. He gets his groceries 3 times a week and goes by bike to the store.

Here we can see that still a lot of people use their car all the time but that is because they have no other option. We see that when people are able to walk or go by bike that they do it. So they are trying to go ass less as possible with their cars. We also see that there are two people who travel differently: a student, the student goes by bus which i think is better than the car becuase multiple people use the bus so there is way less pollution when u use the buss than when u use the car, same counts for the person who traveled by train, a train carries even more people over a large area.
Report
-Introduction
In this little report we will be discussing the the interviews. We interviewed 10 Indian students, 5 teachers, 1 parent and 5 people who use public transport.
-Hypophyses
Indians: we think that the Indians use a bike a lot or go on a walk to school, we also think that they don't travel that much.
Teachers: we think that the teachers who live close to school go on bike to school and those who live far away go with a car. We think that if the school is not too far away the teachers will travel ecofriendly.
parent: because of covid-19 we think that parents don't travel that much therefor parents are nowadays trying to be as ecofriendly as possible.
People who use public transport: we think that these people use the bus or train a lot because they want to travel ecofriendly, if you travel via bus or train there are less cars, less cars mean less pollution.
-Interviews
Indians: We tried to interview 10 Indians but only 9 responded, We asked: How do u travel to school? and how much do you travel? The results weren't as good as we hoped them to be. In the results we saw almost all of them go by car or bus even though we did not even think about them using the bus.
Teachers: we were actually right about this one, you can see that the teachers who live 10km or closer to the school use their bike and the ones that live further away from the school use the train. We are very happy that the teachers try to be as ecofriendly as possible.
Parent: we expected the parent to only go by car like three times a week because they wanted to not use the car so much but we have observed them and we saw that they only went out for groceries and not for anything else, unfortunately they went by car every time and they went all the days in the week instead of buying groceries for multiple days.
people who use public transport: only two of the 5 people used the bus or train, not exactly what we expected but still 2 so there are already a few people who want to be better for then environment. One other person doesn't travel with cars trains or busses at all but that is because of covid-19.

Conclusion
How can we make trips greener? Well you can do that by using the bike or go for a walk, it is also a lot better to use the bus or train than to go by car because one train has less pollution than 100 cars. We will now be looking at how people already try to make trips greener or even who try to.
We see that teachers are very capable of traveling ecofriendly everyday and that in India that is not actually true. Our studies show that the people in India are using the car way too much, that can be because 1.) they might not provide bikes in India or 2.) It is way too dangerous to use the bike because most of the people drive around through India all day and 3.) the reason why they might not be able to walk can be because the schools are way too far away. Our expectation of parents were that they won'y travel much do to corona but they traveled more than we hoped, they went to get groceries with their car everyday, as we see in the interview auke did, his dad is supposed to drive a lot to friesland but because of corona that isn't the thing anymore but overall when there would be no corona we see that they still travel a lot, how can we improve that? They do have to travel far so or they could use the train, or electric cars which are good for the environment! The people who use public transport are not always as ecofriendly as possible because of work, same for the parents here a perfect solution could be using electric cars because i get that you can't always use the train because it doesn't get to all the places.
Overall, the results are better than we expected at some points but could still be improved a lot!
