Introduction
|
Hello, we are Risa, Lilly, Sarah, Mai and Lynn. In this video we are going to introduce ourselves and we will introduce our topic: saving energy at school. |
Our ideas to save energy
Use water taps that turn off themselves with the help of a motion sensor.
|
Use a whiteboard as much as possible, and turn the smartboard off.

Does the school have a policy for saving energy? If yes what?
We don't have a very formal policy in the sense that a policy that is written down. But informally we do have a policy and that is to use as little energy as possible. We were lucky when we moved from the old building, which was a huge building and not very energy efficient to this building which is almost Co2 neutral. Because this building has about 850 solar panels on the roof. That means that almost all the energy that we spend here comes from there. That's one thing and the other thing is everything is highly insulated in this building. So in that sense we really made the average to make the building as energy efficient as possible. |
Are you willing to save energy at school?
Yes I am and you know it's in the ways that I express. For example: you will notice that once you leave this office room the lights go off because there are sensors in the lights that recognize movement. Only when there are people in the rooms the lights go on again, because the sensors sense movement. Even when I'm in my office and don't move, the light turns off because it doesn't sense motion. So this building is full of those type of features to preserve energy and I think that is really important |
Do you have ideas on how to save energy?
Yes there are many ideas but it basically comes down to using less energy. For example: turning off lights, installing solar panels and then it's up to people themself. Everything takes energy right? You can say that perhaps some people choose only to have a certain number of kids because more people means more energy. Other people decide to eat less meat, which is good for the environment. Some people say they don't travel anymore. I can imagine all these things but it's up to the people to decide what they can and can't live without. |
Interviews with students about saving energy at school.
Interviewer:
which energy saving measures of the school do you know?
which energy saving measures of the school do you know?
Jazz van Kleef, 16 – The school has big and many windows so less energy will be wasted. There’s also a fixed temperature in the school which is 21 degrees. The temperature is able to stay the same because of the thick isolation in the walls.
Mikail Adn Akbulut, 15 – Everything in the building is ‘cutting edge’ technology because it’s new, we can see exactly how much energy we use in the building. The building also got solar panels placed on the roof to create our own energy and to save some aswell. Gerteka Sukumar, 15 – We have solar panels on the roof and we have a whole new ventilation system. The new ventilation system helps with getting rid of pollution in the air and bacteria. The ventilation system uses energy from the solar panels. Anabella Allende, 14 – There are led lights in the building, they save a lot more energy than other lights and they are more economical. |
Caitlin van Rietschoten, 13 – The school has many solar panels on the roof.
Bas Kleinee, 15 – There are solar panels to save more energy. Rohan Ramsaroep, 16 – Most of the lights in the building can be dimmed to use instead of using lights that are too bright which take up a lot of energy. Mare Gerbrands, 15 – The school has a lot of solar panels placed on the roof. Yasmine Mekran, 14 – The school makes a use of a ‘climate control’ within the school, this way we use a lot less energy for the temperature inside. The roof is also covered with solar panels. Anya Tarza Hussein, 15 – There’s more isolation in the walls to reduce energy from getting wasted and there are solar panels to create our own energy. The lights are led lights and these are used to reduce the power consumption. |

What do you make that makes sure that people save energy?
The company, Synprodo BV, produces moulded shaped* parts for their customers. We are doing this amongst others by using our own raw materials. Those are foams, such as Styrofoam, Biofoam® and a technical foam named EPP. Styrofoam is used for, for example, insulation for buildings. Because it has great insulation characteristics. If a building is insulated well, you will use less energy as you don't have to use the heating very much when it's cold and you don't have to use the air conditioning when it's warm. The technical foam EPP is applied very much in products, because it also ensures insulation of products, for example. As a result, using EPP, those products receive a better energy label |
Does the product make sure people will save energy?
Depending on the product and application, an energy reduction is realized. |
Do you save energy yourself?
Yes, because we work as much as possible at home due to corona, I talk to costumers online and I don't drive that many kilometres. My fuel consumption is much less than normal. Besides, I try to lower my energy use by not leaving the lights on for a very long time, for example. |
Is the company energy efficient or is there place for improvement?
Synprodo uses the warmth that is escaping during the manufacturing process for the heating of the offices. Besides, we follow the new developments that will help us to save energy during the manufacturing process. To do this we are doing tests with 3D printed mould that needs to make sure that we will need way less energy to make products. A third aspect is recycling and re-use of material. Within our Group (of companies) we have our own recycle companies. We both collect and recycle EPS. New is our developed 100% recycled EPS which we use in our process. For EPP we have a raw material consisting of 15% recycled Ocean wast (Fishnets). Both saves energy and CO2 emissions as we don't need to produce as much new raw material. |
Do you have other ideas on how people can save energy at schools?
Depends on the school; when it is built and out of which materials the school consists. There can be made use of heat recovery systems. (heating and cooling spaces), renewable energy (solar panels). For the older school buildings, you can also save energy by improving the insulation of the building. |
* A mould is a form in which we blow beads of materials. After blowing those beads of EPS or EPP within a mould, heat or steam is then applied directly to the beads which causes them to expand and fuse together. After this process a solid foam product comes out of the mould.
3 aspects for in the policy
1 A specific sort of glass for the windows in the whole building ( high efficiency glass ) because, this isolates well and less energy gets lost this way.
2 There should be taps in the bathroom that shut water down automatically. When you don't have your hand underneath the tap, the sensor will notice when you do and then there won't be water coming out again.
3 Don’t overheat or overcool the temperature in a room, a huge amount of energy is wasted due to heaters and AC’s. Most of the time you don’t even have to use that much energy to warm up or cool a room down.

Conclusion
At the Lorentz Lyceum there are already a lot of things done to save energy but there is still room for improvement. It is better for the school to make a policy so it is clear what is done to save energy. In this policy 3 more things can be added. These are: place a specific type of glass in the whole building called, high efficiency glass, taps with a sensor so when it's not used the water will automatically shut down, and as last don't overheat or overcool the temperature in a room.
Meetings
How did we prepare the video conference?
In English class the teacher gave us time to work on Eumind. We would gather with each other on teams and discuss how far we were with our tasks. After schooltime, if it was necessary, we would message each other on whatsapp to call. What did we learn? We learned how to do a big project. It consists of teamwork and dividing tasks. What went well? When we called each other there wasn't any issue. We would discuss the tasks with each other and if someone had a problem with their tasks we would look at it together. |
Comparison with the Indian students.
This is the meeting that we had with the Indian students to compare the websites with each other. It was nice to see what they have done and that it didn't look like each other. And actually they are completely different! Their interviews were filmed and they had slightly different questions than we had. So that wasn't the same either. |
